Wanaka Bike Tours (‘WBT’) Terms and Conditions

Booking an activity, product or service is acceptance of these terms and conditions.

WBT rents out bikes to individuals, and groups, who are 18-years and older. Where someone riding a bike who under the age of 18 years, as part of a group, providing that the rider within the group who is over the age of 18 years accepts responsibility for the younger rider, this person is deemed to be the person who is booking the activity.

Riders Liability – You, and your party, acknowledge that you are participating in an activity that involves risks that are beyond the control of WBT and using a bike involves inherent risks to you, other persons and the equipment being used by both parties. These risks also include – but are not limited to – inclement weather, rough riding track conditions, navigational difficulties, personal illness, collisions and accidents all of which may occur during the period of your rental. These risks also include your ability to control a bike whilst riding within your own capabilities and taking the appropriate actions to reduce risks. WBT reserves the right to withdraw any person from the activity who it believes, or judges, to be danger to themselves or others on the trails.

To the extent permitted by law you hereby release, waive, discharge, hold blameless and indemnify WBT and all persons, entities and contractors connected to WBT from any and all liability for death, disability, personal injury (including mental injury), property damage, property theft, loss of personal equipment and all other foreseeable risks, claims or actions of any kind (including negligence) whatever and however occurring which may arise, at any time, from or in connection with, directly or indirectly, as a consequence of you carrying out these activities. 

If you have chosen to contract with WBT for bike hire then you are liable for damage caused to any bike hired while using or in charge of the bike. We expect that bikes will experience general wear and tear and are very accepting of this. 

This does not extend to broken components or frame where the user has had an accident, has been negligent or purposefully damaged the bicycle. In all cases you agree to accept responsibility and pay for the repair of damaged or broken items, noting that we will only pass on the wholesale cost (inc GST) of the component plus any labour involved in the repair.

Your obligations – If you are unable to meet the transport on-time then this may create additional costs for yourselves.

All participants must obey New Zealand Road rules on your ride. It is compulsory to wear a helmet in New Zealand when cycling, therefore, no helmet, no ride, and no refunds. We may have to decline your rights to participate in the rental of our equipment for this reason. 

Once the bike is in your possession, you are responsible for the bike and equipment. You must lock the bike every time it is out of your sight.

Please support our Support Crew team members by taking the time to listen during the safety briefing as it is important to ensure that you ride safely and enjoy your ride.

You acknowledge that you are physically fit enough and that there is no health, injuries (past or present) or any other reason why you should not use participate in this activity.

WBT obligations – We will always aim make your experience as enjoyable as possible and our team will ensure that you would want to use, or recommend, our services again.

WBT are responsible for delivering your experience as described. We pride ourselves on not only the quality of our equipment and resources but also on our team members who will support you on your experience. 

Occasionally, it may not be possible to provide you with an exact match of your bike requirement, however, we will always provide an alternative suitable bike.

Our Support Crew may take photos of our riders for safety, identification and memento reasons. We will always try and share these images with the member of your group who has booked the ride as a memory of the occasion. These photos can be requested, if we have not managed to send them to you. We may also use these images in the course of our normal business. This includes, but is not limited to, our website and social media pages. At no point will these images be connected with the names of the participants. We welcome riders posting images on their own experience as part of a review or social media post.

In the event of a natural disaster, or national lockdowns we will either transfer your ride date, issue you a gift card to use with another rider or refund the costs of booking, less unrecoverable fees.

Pricing – All pricing is in New Zealand Dollars and are inclusive of any Goods and Services Tax (GST) unless stated.

Cancellations – Your safety is our number one priority. We reserve the right to cancel any hire or experience where we believe that the weather or trail conditions could result in a significant risk to your safety. On these rare occasions we would offer an alternative experience on the same day ie another trail, a transfer to an alternative date or a full refund. 

Bookings made through a third party, either a travel agency or tourism website are almost always non-refundable. You should always contact your agent to discuss cancellation options. We will always try to do the right thing and will discuss cancellation options with your agent.

If you fail to arrive for your scheduled activity your booking will be non-refundable. Please check your activity details carefully for your meeting time.


Please note: Under normal conditions it may rain, be cold, foggy, hot or sunny. Please make sure that you bring appropriate clothing and protection for your ride. We can provide rear rack bags or saddle bags upon request for you to be able to hold enough clothing and personal effects to be able to enjoy a one-day ride through most normal weather conditions.

If you choose to cancel your booking within 2 days of your activity, there will be no refund however we are happy to work with you to transfer your ride to another day or issue you with a gift card for you to use for another rider.  We advise that you check the weather forecasts as your activity date gets closer, and decide if the weather will be a barrier to you participating on your booked activity.

Late Return Clause – all products include a finishing time. A late return has a knock on effect which can cause our staff to finish their day later than planned, as well as causing issues the next day when a bike is unable to be cleaned and inspected in time for the next customer..  WBT reserve the right to issue a penalty fee for rentals returned more than 15-minutes after the time the bikes are due to be returned. The penalty fee is $25 for each 15-minute period after a 15-minute grace period.

New Zealand Law – This agreement is governed in all respects by the laws of New Zealand and the parties submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of New Zealand. Visitors to New Zealand must have full insurance due to limited ACC cover. Note that these Terms and Conditions are subject to any rights or remedies the Client may have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.
